Obituary of Anne Whittle

Mrs. Anne Baker Black Whittle died on December 25, 2020 at home. She was 87 years of age.

Mrs. Whittle, a native of Barnwell, SC, was the widow of Lauriston Keith Whittle and a daughter of the late Aaron Samuel Black and Leila Earle Baker Black.

A 1950 graduate of Barnwell High School, Mrs. Whittle graduated Cum Laude from the University of South Carolina, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Business in 1978.

In her early career, Mrs. Whittle was employed as a legal secretary and she later taught math at the Barnwell County Vocational Center.

Mrs. Whittle was an Associate Member of Shandon United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Ola B. Taylor Circle and a former member of the Good Will Sunday School Class.

Before moving to Columbia in 2004, Mrs. Whittle lived for many years in Williston where she was an active member of the Williston United Methodist Church. She served as a member of the church's board and was a former member of the Ruth Rogers Circle. She also served as a lay delegate on the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee. Additionally, Mrs. Whittle was a former member of the Williston Magnolia Garden Club and the American Legion Auxiliary.

“Munsy” always put God, family, and friends first. Her smile could light up a room. She will be greatly missed.

Mrs. Whittle is survived by two daughters, Susan W. Watts, of Columbia, and Lauri W. Edwards, of Hendersonville, NC; four grandchildren, Baker Watts and William "Kip" Watts, both of Columbia, and Luke "Buddy" Edwards of Alamogorrdo,NM, Meredith Edwards of Hendersonville, NC; beloved niece who was like a daughter, Mary Chalker of San Jose, Costa Rica, two great grandchildren and a sister, Dehra B. Creech, of Barnwell and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Wilbur and Harold Black, of Barnwell. Special thanks to those wonderful people who are like family, Glenda Bradford, Mollie Thompson, Curtis Young and the many friends and family members who supported her along life’s journey.

Private graveside services at Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Columbia will be forthcoming.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Williston United Methodist Church, 6030 Springfield Road, Williston, SC 29853; to the Shandon United Methodist Church, 3407 Divine Street, Columbia, SC 29205; or to a favorite charity.
