Obituary of Athenia M. Gilchrist

“Tina” Athenia M Gilchrist, born to Alexander H Melvin and Gladys Baldwin Melvin on May 15, 1943, left this earthly world on Sept 3, 2020. She is survived by a daughter, Deidre Burks (Daron), a grandson Eriane Bibbs, a granddaughter Janelle Thurston (Tyler), one great-granddaughter Troinya Bibbs, one great-grandson Robert Thurston, a cousin Shirley Reed, and a number of relatives and friends.

Tina had a lifelong dedication to learning. She was educated in the public schools of North Carolina and New York. She continued her formal education at Fayetteville Technical College, and the University of South Carolina. In addition, she earned a certificate in Interior Design from Midlands Technical College.

She was an active member of various groups. Tina served as Treasurer of the South Carolina Silver Haired Legislature, Financial Secretary of the Emmanuel Drew Senior Club, Treasurer of the Columbia City Council of Beta Sigma Phi International Sorority, the organizing Alpha Xi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi International Sorority. Her years of sorority involvement included receiving the “Order of the Rose” for 15 years of service and the “Alpha Omega Award,” an honor for outstanding participation only given to North Carolina and South Carolina members.

Over the years, she selflessly donated time and resources to organizations like “Sistercare Family Shelter,” the Prisma Health Midlands Foundation, Blumenthal Performing Arts, and anyone she could help. Tina enjoyed traveling, meeting new people, and making friends wherever she went.

Her parting wish is for everyone she leaves behind, who knew her well or just a little, to celebrate the life she led. “Please don’t cry for me!” Smile and turn to someone and say ” she had a blessed life.”

Love you all.
