I remember growing up with Doug living beside me. We played with our brothers and sisters daily. He had a funny sense of humor even as a child. He led such an honorable life I am proud to call him my cousin. Praying for peace and comfort for his family in the coming days.

I was so fortunate to have Doug as a boss, and as a friend. I always felt that he truly cared for his staff, and DHEC’s mission. We had a relationship based on mutual respect and trust and I treasured it. He was such a loss to DHEC, and my thoughts and prayers go to his family now and all of his friends. We did some good work, and had some good laughs! Rest In Peace, Doug, you truly deserve it my friend.

Doug and I were lifelong friends. He was president of our Senior Class at Boiling Springs High School in Spartanburg and was extremely well liked by many. We both went to Carolina as freshmen, survived the riots, and served together in the Student Senate. I will never forget the time spent visiting and communicating with him over the past few months.

I am so sorry for your loss. One of the best things I remember from my last few years at DHEC was getting to work more closely with Doug and getting to know him. He was a good man and a good colleague. The world would be better off if we had more folks like Doug Calvert.

Terron, he was such a wonderful man. He always had a smile on his face, and always whistling. I remember all the good times we all had in the Commissioner's office, and so sad when he retired in 2013. I remember him dressing up as Elvis and watching him work on the ELVIS sign in white lights. It was so funny and he had such a good time doing that. He was one of a kind, and he will be missed by everyone very much. You and children are in my prayers. Shannon Knox

I feel so fortunate to have known and worked with Doug. We served on several GIS and IT Committees while we were both employed by the State. But by far, the best part was getting to know and become friends with him. Doug kept bees as did my grandfather and he would build or repair anything. I had similar interest although his skills and ambitions were much more than mine. When he first went into the hospital we tried to figure out how to get a Volkswagen engine into his room so he could work on his airplane. Surprising to both of us, the nurse said it would be ok as long as the floor was protected. Not sure either of us actually believed them. We were in college at the same time and both shared a love for the same music of the 1960s and 1970s. Two things I enjoyed most were his quirky sense of humor and our conversations about politics and life in general. My deepest sympathies to his family and all of those who loved Doug. He will be missed but he will forever live in our hearts.

Terron, my heart aches for you and your family as you mourn Doug’s passing. He was a good man. His friendship was treasured by many, and he will be remembered for his kindness and generosity of spirit. I know he loved his family and know he was very proud of Ryan and Hannah Grace by the way he spoke about them. May God grant you solace and comfort during this difficult time.
