Obituary of Ronald Weston McCathern

Ronald Weston McCathern, a devoted father and grandfather, departed this life on Saturday, December 23, 2023 after a long battle with vascular dementia. Born in Columbia, South Carolina, on May 3, 1957, to the late Dr. Billy Mac McCathern and Leona Weston McCathern, his life was rich with family, friends and sports.

Ron is survived by his daughter, Tyler McCathern and two granddaughters, Carmella and Launi McCathern. Also, two sisters, Avis Cunningham (Bobby) and Julie Sizer (Danny), and a brother, Weston McCathern (Angie), along with many nieces and nephews.

Ron was an accomplished multi-sport athlete at Irmo High School and graduated from Irmo with the class of 1975. He went on to play baseball at Anderson College. After transferring to Greenville Tech, he earned his degree in dental laboratory technology. He worked alongside his father, Dr. McCathern, at the McCathern Dental Lab for the greater part of his career.

Ron was a dedicated football and baseball coach for over 40 years. He will be remembered by many for his commitment to youth sports teams across the midlands. Ron was also a loyal, lifetime University of South Carolina Gamecock fan and regularly attended sporting events for the school throughout the years. He made sure to pass his love for Gamecock sports on to his daughter and granddaughters, as well.

Ron played a significant role in his granddaughter’s lives over the years. He was committed to being there for them on a daily basis. His loving dedication to Carmella and Launi made him much more than just a grandfather to them.

Memorials can be made to the Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission or a charity of your choice.
