Obituary of Susan Hicks Edwards

In loving memory of our mother, Susan Hicks Edwards, 76, of Columbia, SC. 

Susan passed away, with both of her children by her side, the evening of September 22, 2023, after a yearlong battle with cancer.

Susan was born on June 30, 1947 to Inez Derrick Hicks and Lewis English Hicks in Columbia, SC.  After graduating from Dreher High School in 1965, she went on to earn her associates degree from the University of South Carolina.

In 2015, Susan retired from her lifelong career at the South Carolina State House. She built many lifelong relationships and met some of her nearest and dearest friends while working at the State House for over 35 years.

She loved her family and friends, going to the beach, reading, listening and dancing to beach music, playing bridge, telling jokes and watching funny movies, southern food, a good steak, dogs (especially her “grand-puppies”), great manners, and proper grammar.  Once equipped with an iPhone, she also became fond of the novel-style text message.

Susan was very proud of many things in her life; she was most especially proud of the three people who call her “Mimi.” Her three grandchildren: Ainsley, Hampton, and Henry meant the world to her - she loved her three grandchildren more than words can ever say.

Susan was predeceased by her father and her mother. She is survived by her brother, Charles Derrick Hicks (Kelly) of Blythewood, SC, and her two children, Owen Michael Edwards (Whitney) of Columbia, SC and English Elizabeth Adams of Charleston, SC.

The family would like to thank The Palmettos of Parklane for all their support over the last few years; she loved living there, and she loved everyone who worked, and lived, there with her.

Susan requested no services be held and that her ashes be spread by her children in three specific places she held closest to her heart. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in her name to the Colorectal Cancer Alliance or the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation.
