Obituary of Herta McClain

Irmo, SC - Herta McClain, age 90, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 21, 2023, in Irmo, SC, formerly of Austintown, OH. She was born on January 11, 1933, in Schwabach, Germany, to the late Johann and Sophie Kapfenberger and was the last surviving sibling among six children. In 1958, Herta emigrated from Germany to Youngstown, Ohio, where she found love and companionship with her late husband, Thomas W. (Tom) McClain, who was employed in the steel industry. Together, they built a beautiful life in Austintown, OH, until retiring to Columbia, SC, in 1994.

Herta's dedication to her daughters and family was unwavering, bringing her the utmost joy and fulfillment. She was renowned for her extraordinary baking skills, especially her delectable apple and pecan pies. During the holiday season, Herta's kitchen would transform into a cookie-making haven, and her legendary Christmas cookies, fondly known as "Herta Cookies," were distributed among numerous extended family members, becoming a beloved seasonal tradition.

Preceded in death by her loving husband of 57 years, Tom, who passed away in September 2016, Herta leaves behind a cherished legacy of love and warmth. She is survived by her three devoted daughters: Karen (Tim) McCulla of Wesley Chapel, NC; Robin (Bob) Welsh of Chapin, SC; and Julia (Ron) Chatel of Coventry, CT. Herta's memory will also be cherished by her adoring grandchildren: Thomas "Mac" (Meredith) Welsh of Greenville, SC; Nate (Kate) Welsh of Chapin, SC; Ryan (Kiristan) Welsh of Huntersville, NC; Sarah McCulla of Matthews, NC; Lt. Matthew (Libby) McCulla of Charleston, SC; Rachael Chatel of Manchester, CT; and Greg Chatel of Coventry, CT. Her great-grandchildren, including Avery (Mac & Meredith) Welsh, Emeline and Sullivan (Nate & Kate) Welsh, and Peter (Matthew & Libby) McCulla, will forever carry her spirit in their hearts.

A private service and interment will be held for the family at Fort Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia, South Carolina. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorials to be made to the National Alzheimer's Association or a local hospice of your choice.

In the wake of Herta McClain's passing, may her memory be a beacon of love and inspiration to all who knew her. She touched the lives of many, and her legacy will continue to flourish through the generations she leaves behind. May she rest in eternal peace.
