Obituary of Jih Ming Wang

Jih Ming Wang, 91, of Columbia, SC passed away quietly on May 9, 2023. He was born on August 27, 1932 in Jiangsu Province, China.

He was a devoted father and husband and is survived by his wife, Luan; and son, Warren.

In 1949, he was one of many who fled China's tumultuous times as Communist forces took over the mainland and escaped to Taiwan. While completing his studies there, he met the love of his life, Luan. Together they would find themselves emigrating to America to begin a new family and life.  

For over 30 years, Jih Ming served as a teacher and mentor for many. His years as a Professor of Chemistry at the University of South Carolina at Union was the highlight of his career and the one that he would serve until retirement.      

Jih Ming had a thirst for knowledge and reading that lasted until the end. His love for the newspaper encompassed two languages and he kept a home library that was well stocked to answer questions as well as raise them.  

Jih Ming was a man who lived a long life that saw the ups and downs of world history. From the start of the Chinese Civil War, World World II, to the landing on the moon and the nuclear age. He will be missed but inevitably proud that his legacy lives on.  

A memorial service will be held on May 26, 2023 at First Baptist Church 1306 Hampton St. Columbia, SC.
