Obituary of Daniel Beach Dix

Daniel Beach Dix, 64, died unexpectedly on Monday, July 3, 2023, in Chapin, SC.

Daniel was born May 2, 1959, in Mobile, AL, the eldest son of Alexander Beach Dix, Jr, and Linda Barrett Dix. He graduated from the University of South Alabama, then completed a master’s in 1984, and earned a PhD in Mathematics from University of Chicago in 1988. In 1983, he attended Moody Bible Institute and it was through mutual friends at Moody that he met his wife, Jean. They married in 1984 and welcomed a daughter, Amy, and son Nathan. After Chicago, they lived in Minneapolis, MN, State College, PA, and Irmo, SC before settling in Chapin. Dan worked as a math professor at University of South Carolina and had recently completed 30 years.

His love for the world of mathematics also extended to love for the natural world, family, and many other areas of interest and study. Always curious and always in wonder, he found joy and amazement in the details of the world and patterns. Dan and his family loved to hike, camp and travel and his joy in God’s world was clear. He loved to sit down over coffee or Korean food and discuss the intricacies of stars, languages, theology – he was an eternal student and a brilliant mind.

Dan deeply valued loyalty, truthfulness, perseverance and consistency, and lived these values in his relationships with his signature thoughtfulness and sincerity.

He loved God, his neighbor, and his family well. Dan's greatest joy and pride was in his family. He had a gentle, quiet way of showing his love and affection. He was Jean’s best friend and dedicated, loving, caring, supportive, protective husband.

Dan was dedicated and served at his church on the missions committee, benevolence committee, and prayer team. His sincere desire was to help people.

He is survived by his wife of almost forty years, Jean Sveum Dix, his two children Amy Dix [spouse Edward Currie] and Nathan Dix, grandson Struan Currie, and his siblings, Mark Alexander Dix, George David Dix, and Linda Elizabeth Al-Rakan and their families. He is also survived by Jean’s brother, Bill Sveum and his family.
