Obituary of Ruby McGwigan Purrington Hickman
Ruby (Junie) McGwigan Purrington Hickman, Age 90 (July 27, 1931), passed away on Sunday November 21, 2021 at Lexington Medical Center.
A 16 year resident of The South Carolina Episcopal Retirement Community at Still Hopes, she is survived by her husband of 69 years, Dr. Edgar P Hickman, as well as her sons Powell Hickman (Lyn), John Hickman (Cindy), four grandchildren, Meredith Bybee, Elizabeth Bannister, Harrison Hickman, and Grace Hickman and three great grandchildren.
She was reared in Enfield NC, attended St Mary’s College in Raleigh NC, and raised her family in Iowa City, Iowa, and Columbia SC. She started her professional career working for the Southern Fellowship Fund run by former Carnegie Endowment Executive Secretary Robert Lester in Chapel Hill NC, supporting her husband through grad school. She worked for a number of years as financial secretary at First Presbyterian Church of Columbia , and was a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. She thrilled in creating acrylic land and sea scapes which filled her homes, and studied under Columbia artist Ed Yaghijian. She thrived while exploring Europe in search of her British family roots, and treasured her exploration of the nation’s history through membership in the Jamestown Society and First Families of NC. She shared her loves of gardening with her Spring Valley neighbors and had almost fifty years of good times with her tennis and golf partners at Forest Lake Club. Her family delighted in their time with her at her beloved Sullivan’s Island.
A memorial service will be held at Trinity Cathedral at 11:00 am on December 4, 2021, with committal in Trinity Churchyard.
