Obituary of Tommie Magnolia Hawthorne

In honor of: Reverend Sister Tommie Magnolia Hawthorne

First light: May 5, 1934

Angelic embrace: October 7, 2021

As she wished for, in the comfort of her home surrounded by family, she was truly at ease and still sharing her sweet kisses. Mother transitioned at 2:29 am. Peacefully with her baby daughter and first grandchild by her bedside embracing hands. Mom sat up and took her last gasp for air on earth. I gently closed her eyes as she joined the Lord on her heavenly born-day.

Ms. Hawthorne, the matriarch of our family, was born in Abbeville, SC to the late Leslie Jane Jackson & Boyce Hawthorne, and Sister Bessie Lee Boseman the last living sibling of their parents.

She left SC and moved to New York City to start anew. Mother was diagnosed in her very early years with Schizophrenia a mental illness that she had a hard time accepting all her life.

Mother worked as an Executive Secretary for NYC gov’t, and side gig at Macys for employment. She started having children at the age of 23 yrs, with gaps between all four of her kids up to age 39 yrs, it was a difficult challenge raising us kids to say the least. She was a single Mother her entire life who never married.

She was an ordained minister preaching the gospel and had the gift of healing the sick, especially children with oral thrash. Something that really made her cheerful was walking and being outdoors the simple pleasures.

She also liked to sing, it was off key lol & dance with no rhythm and get down, a trait thank goodness she didn’t pass unto the rest of the family lol.

Mom enjoyed using her hands at multiple things, sewing to make clothes, covering furniture, knitting hats, gloves and blankets, painting unique pictures, gardened and nurtured her plants, baked from scratch her tasty biscuits, pies, cakes and her signature banana pudding and sweet potato pie were the family favorites.

She Sheltered, fed and clothed people & animals and made room at home for them. She gambled it was hardly a big hit, but it was enough to take care of matters, She especially enjoyed playing country music, but she introduced all genres in our home environment.

She was a giver and would sacrifice her last or pull the clothes off her back because if she had it you did to. Oh, what a loving caretaker especially when her children started having her sacred Grandkids, the enjoyment in her heart and love for them was everything to her.

Mom loved meeting new individuals, traveling, going to the fair, playing cards, and games. Shopping and everything she picked out and liked was expensive of course. Maw’s favorite perfume was Ralph Lauren Romance, and yes she would have a backup bottle to make sure it didn’t run out. Some of her favorite shows, TBN: Creflo Dollar/TD Jakes/Joyce Meyers/Joel Osteen etc, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, Family Feud, The Voice, Blake was her guy/The View>Whoopi was her girl, Dancing w/the Stars. Politics Nation w/Al Sharpton, The Reidout w/Joy, Wendy Williams, The Real, The Masked Singer, Wild & Out, All BET Awards and musical shows.

She was full of wisdom, laughed a lot more and also became very affectionate later on in life. Mother had and didn’t want or need for anything, she was spoiled and well taken care of. Lord knows she always had a boyfriend. She did and lived how she chose despite it all. By far the strongest woman I ever known!
