Obituary of Marilyn Jean Miss
Marilyn Jean Miss was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, on August 1, 1927, and died in Columbia, SC, on April 26, 2021. Her family moved to Hawaii for a year and then to Manchester, Iowa, where she started school. She later lived in Bemidji and Minneapolis, MN before moving to California during high school. Marilyn received a Masters Degree in Elementary Education from California State University, Los Angeles.
She taught elementary school in California and Ohio. Later she taught early childhood special education in California and Colorado.
She is survived by her son, Michael Masters of Columbia, SC; son, Martin Masters and daughter-in-law, Debra Lynn Masters of Shoreview, MN; daughter, Susan Steedman and son-in-law, John Steedman of Columbia, SC; and son, Matthew Masters of Buford, GA; as well as her sister, Patricia Alzobaie of Morelia, Mexico. She had six grandchildren: Victor Rivera, Christopher Masters, Morgan Masters, Sarah Steedman, Michael Masters and Jonathan Masters.
Marilyn had a lifelong interest in religion and politics. She enjoyed reading, cooking, hiking, swimming and attending art exhibits, lectures and political rallies. Marilyn lived in a number of states and enjoyed learning about different communities. She loved nature and being outdoors, especially in her beloved Rocky Mountains. Marilyn was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbia, SC.
