Obituary of Roy Paul Wittlinger

Roy Paul Wittlinger, Ph.D. age 79, of Chapin, SC died with his family by his side at home on Saturday, April 17, 2021. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio on November 22, 1941 to the late Paul O. Wittlinger and Violet Becker Wittlinger.

He grew up in Barker, New York and graduated in 1963 from the College of Wooster in Wooster, OH. Roy pursued a master’s degree and completed his doctorate in Experimental Psychology at the Ohio State University. After completing post-doctoral studies at U.C. Berkley in Berkley, CA, he taught at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, OH for 32 years as a full professor in the Psychology Department. Professor Wittlinger originated the cognitive psychology course, taught statistics and computer science classes, and positively impacted countless students over his career. During the last several years of his tenure at the OWU, he served as the first Director of Information Systems with responsibility for the infrastructure of academic and administrative computing on campus.  Roy retired in 2000 and moved to Chapin, South Carolina in 2007.

Special memories include decades of camping and boating in the Adirondack Mountains of central NY, especially at Racquette Lake. Roy also enjoyed boating on Lake Murray and traveling to the South Carolina beaches with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Patricia Iovino Wittlinger, their daughter, Claire (Matthew) Robinson, and grandchildren, Laura age 6 and Jacob Robinson, age 3. Additional family members include brother Robert (Carol) Wittlinger of Lockport, NY, Jane (Jack) Weet of Victor, NY, and in-laws, William (Cathy) Iovino of Pittsburgh, PA.
