Obituary of Michael David Hunter

On November 21, 2020, Michael David Hunter, loving husband of Martha Bode, and cherished father of Grace Hunter Clark and Hannah Hunter, died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 67. David was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Alice, and his parents, Charles and Lorene Rycroft Hunter. He is survived by his wife, Martha Bode; his daughters, Grace Hunter Clark (Charles) and Hannah Hunter; sister, Susan Hunter Atkins; brother Vincent Hunter; loving in-laws, several nieces and nephews, and his grand-dog, Jeffery.

David was born in Atlanta, Georgia on July 10, 1953. He loved Charleston and graduated from College of Charleston in 1982. Is it any wonder that both daughters graduated from there? David started work with the State of South Carolina as a mainframe and database programmer for SC Employment Security System (now SC DEW), retiring in July 2018.

David enjoyed working behind the scenes with local theatre communities including Town Theater – where he met and fell in love with Martha – and Workshop Theatre – where he and Martha married on its stage in 1991. Although he became less involved choosing to spend more time with family, many fast and true theatre friendships continue to this day. On learning the severity of his condition, one of those friends posted on Facebook, “.... and all I can think about, is you. You made me laugh and smile. And I want to tell you; You are my friend and I love you so very much. We have eaten hundreds of wings and drank lots of margaritas......you were there when I spilled paint.... we laughed.....once I forgot a hammer was on the ladder and hit me in the head..... we laughed even more.... we had fun building stuff. I just wish I could tell you this in person.....”

David started coaching soccer when the girls were small and his interest in soccer only grew. He was enthralled with world soccer games (especially Manchester United) and was a true USC Women’s Soccer enthusiast, rarely missing a home game.

David loved music – all music – klezmer, jazz, Broadway, Japanese folk, bluegrass. He took mandolin lessons and could, on rare occasion, be coaxed into playing a bit. He loved homegrown heirloom tomatoes and Lizard’s Thicket sweet tea, and hated mayonnaise and squirrels.

His greatest joy came from being Daddy to his beloved daughters. “You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are gray. You’ll never know dear, how much I love you. Please don’t take my sunshine away.” Our sunshine may be gone but will never stop shining down on us.

David was known for his quiet demeanor, quick wit, compassionate spirit, and for being a real friend and true constant in so many lives.

David will be cremated by the South Carolina Cremation Society with a memorial announced at a later date.

The family requests that you not send flowers. If you want to honor David’s memory, please tell the people in your life that you love them!
