Obituary of Shirley C Snyder

Mrs. Shirley C. Snyder passed away October 9th 2020 in Richland County, Irmo, South Carolina.  She was 85 years old. A private home service was held.

Born October 22nd 1934 in Dothan, Alabama, she was the daughter of the Late James C Chafin Sr of Blountstown Florida, and the Late Pansy M Chafin of Altha, Florida.

Mrs. Shirley grew up in the southside area of Jacksonville, FL, graduating with honors from Landon High School in 1952. In 1952, she married her high-school sweetheart, Stephen Dennis Snyder, Jr.

They married and resided in Columbia, SC, were parents to 5 sons and 1 daughter, divorcing in 1981 and remarrying to the day in 2010.

Beginning in 1975, Shirley worked for Sheriff Powell, Sloan, and Lott at the Richland County Sheriff’s Office in Columbia, SC. She also did some part-time work at the C & S bank from 1978 to 1985, finally retiring in 1997.

Shirley had various hobbies, which included: art, sewing, doll collecting, amateur photography, and family genealogy. During Hurricane Hugo she was a licensed “HAM” amateur radio operator, assisting at the Carolina Coliseum in Columbia in 1989.

There are three surviving sons, Stephen Dennis Snyder III (Susan); Carl Brian Snyder and Mark Allan Snyder Sr. All three of Columbia, South Carolina. There is also a daughter Stephanie Denise Snyder-Reis (Jose) of Bishopville, South Carolina. A sister, Pamela C Roach-Motes (Harry) of Jacksonville Florida; and brother J. Carl Snyder Jr (Susan) of Altha, Florida. Twelve grandchildren: Wende Collins (Greg), Tabitha Parker, Stacy Snyder Earp, Stephen D Snyder IV, Sean D Snyder, Shelby S Snyder, Mark A Snyder Jr, Courtney A Snyder, Juli A Hulon, Marijean E Reis-Wilson (Joey), and Manuel E Reis. Thirteen great-grandchildren: Taylor Collins-Waddle (Lewis), Hailey Collins, Gregory Collins, Aaron Collins, Jesse Collins, Kevin Parker Jr, Kaleb Parker, Ethan Earp, Rosemary Snyder, Israel Etheridge, Aliyana B Snyder, Jadelyn Snyder, and Johnny M Wilson. She also has four nephews Jim and Matt Roach of Jacksonville, Florida; and Corey and Cale Chafin of Altha, Florida.

Predeceased by her husband, Stephen Dennis Snyder Jr. (2018); and sons, Paul Lawrence Snyder (1974) and Joseph Dwight Snyder (1979).
