I’m so sorry for your loss. I just found out about Kathy’s passing at a recent writers dinner from former students of hers. I met Kathy in Czechoslovakia when we were volunteer English teachers in Nitra. When I returned to the States we met up again in Hyde Park.
We were in a tiny town in the Tatras on the Polish border in August 1991 when the attempted Soviet coup took place. We huddled around a small TV with our host who would occasionally look at us, ashen-faced , and repeat “democracy good.” I wish all the family peace.

Dear Gretchen, Gar, and all the family Kathy loved dearly,
Kathy (then Mrs. Woertendyke) was my American Lit/English teacher when I was in the 9th grade at Airport Jr High School, Los Angeles, back in 1967-68. She was an amazing teacher who helped me in my life with more than just English. Years later I searched for her online and wrote a thank-you letter and she contacted me back. We have kept in touch now and then throughout the years via email and phone- the last time being the the first quarter of this year. She was so enjoying her retirement and loving being with her family. When her Christmas card didn’t arrive as usual this year and I heard no response from mine, I tried emailing and called. That’s when I searched online and learned of her passing. It’s a sad day. Kathy’s many contributions to this world will live on through her family and the lives of all the students she impacted. Prayers for you all! Andria Sigler-Smalz

Dear Gar, Gretchen and Family,
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your mother. I knew your mother as Ms. W-- she was my 2nd grade teacher at Lab in 1981-1982 and have many good memories of that school year. She was a fun, caring and upbeat teacher. (Secretly, I'm glad she let us have recess nearly every day--sometimes twice a day.)
While I may not remember exactly what I learned academically, your mother encouraged me to speak up more and advocate for myself. These are skills I continue to improve upon in my middle age, and matters so much especially now.
Thank you for sharing your mother with so many of us. She helped us grow to be more independent, curious, and thoughtful people.
Sending good thoughts and love to you and to those who love and were loved by Ms. W.
Sincerely,
Cheryl Cortez LAB '92

When I think of Kathy, I think of her raw hearty laugh. She made people think they were saying the funniest thing in the world. But she wasn't only a great audience; she was incredibly funny. The older I get, the more I appreciate funny people. They're smart, they're quick and they don't miss much. This was Kathy. She didn't suffer fools and she got the joke. As a high schooler, which was when I met Kathy, this made me feel pretty great. Spending 10,000 hours in her house with Gretchen, Kathy filled the room with humor and food. When I think of Kathy, I smile. That's what her memory does to me. Of course, I also remember her cooking. It was so insanely delicious and sophisticated. The woman knew delicious like it was her first language. Thank you for sharing part of your life with me. It left a mark. Love you, Amy
