No one gets out of this life unscathed, but some folks seem to encounter way more than their fair share of obstacles for one lifetime. Such was Michael's lot in life, but to his credit he faced his medical challenges with a stoicism and grace that is rarely seen in the face of such adversity. That he was able to endure that much suffering and still maintain his sense of humor and humanity is a testament to the strength of his character.
I didn't know Michael well but well enough to know that he was a kind and gentle man who loved all animals both domestic and wild and loved being out in nature, particularly on the beautiful stretch of river just outside his house. Some of my fondest memories are of being with Michael and Ed Powell on a warm and sunny day drifting down the Saluda River in one of Michael's many kayaks, then joining Lynn and Patsy Powel at dusk around the Dillard pool to talk and laugh and enjoy a glass of wine (or three) together.
My heart goes out to Lynn, Christina, Tony, and the rest of the Dillard clan. And to Michael - thanks for the memories, my friend. You will be missed.
