Obituary of William Alfred Florence

William Alfred (Lulu) Florence passed away the morning of May 31, 2022 in his home surrounded by his wife and children. He was born in Lincolnton, Georgia, on February 22, 1937, to Paul Wilson Florence and Carol Teasley Florence.

In 1942, his family moved to West Columbia, South Carolina, where he resided for 80 years. As a young man, he loved sports and played football at Brookland-Cayce High School where he graduated in 1957. He loved the game of snooker and in his later years developed a love for golf. In his golfing days, he met many life-long friends who were dear to him. Alfred also loved his Gamecocks.

Alfred was a visionary and entrepreneur who fiercely loved and to whom many came for advice. The lives he impacted will not be known this side of heaven, but the stories about him are large to the point of mythical. He had incredible street sense and a great insight for business.

In his final days, he wanted all who knew him to know his love for the Lord and how much he looked forward to seeing his loved ones in heaven. He was emphatic that we all know that Jesus is The Way.

Alfred’s greatest desire was to honor and care for his family. He is survived by the love of his life of 60 years, Charlotte, his children Elizabeth Ann Wallace (Thomas) and Michael B. Florence (Elizabeth), and his brother Hugh T. Florence. He is also survived by his granddaughters Madison Wallace, Meredith Wallace (Chase Corbitt), Payton Hollingsworth (Bradley), Kathleen Stringer, and Cassie Abrahamson whose numerous recitals and sports events he so enjoyed attending. Alfred was preceded in death by his mother, father, infant brother and many loving aunts and uncles.

There will be a celebration of life at his home for family and friends on July 7, 2022, from 11AM-1PM. In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be made to Saluda River Baptist Church at 3459 Sunset Blvd, West Columbia, SC, 29168. Alfred’s other favorite charities include The Salvation Army, St. Jude’s, and Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.

South Carolina Cremation Society is assisting the family. Family and friends may sign the online guest book by clicking on the "tribute wall" tab above.
