Obituary of Olivia Turkett Chestnut

COLUMBIA- Olivia Turkett Chestnut, age 101, died on Saturday, April 30, 2022, after a long illness. She passed away peacefully at her home of many years.

Mrs. Chestnut was predeceased by her husband, Robert J. Chestnut, and her son, Robert B. Chestnut. She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca, and loving daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Chestnut, four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. The family would also like to recognize two of Mrs. Chestnut’s loyal friends and neighbors, Debra and Ray Smith.

A native of Fairfield County, Mrs. Chestnut spent most of her life residing on Superior Street in Columbia. “Miss Olivia,” as she was referred to by so many of her friends, was a long-time member of Saint Timothy’s Episcopal Church, Columbia. A plaque in St. Timothy’s sanctuary honors Miss Olivia’s years of quiet and unassuming devotion to the church’s mission. “Granny,” as she was lovingly referred to by her closest family members, embraced life to the fullest and took every opportunity to help others in need. Mrs. Chestnut was not only a skilled cook and seamstress but also was gifted with a sly sense of humor and more than a century’s worth of innate, common-sense wisdom.

A memorial service will be held at Saint Timothy’s Episcopal Church, 900 Calhoun St, Columbia, SC 29201 on June 12, 2022 at 2:30 PM. Afterwards, a private interment will follow.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to Saint Timothy’s Episcopal Church or Amedisys Hospice.
