Obituary of C. Clifton DuBois, PhD

C. Clifton DuBois, PhD passed away peacefully on November 15 at his home in Chapin, South Carolina. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Pitman Smith; his children, Rachel and Daniel DuBois; his siblings Gary Weldon DuBois, June Carolyn DuBois Sims, and Thomas DuBois. He is predeceased by his parents, William Hagan and Ruth DuBois, and his sister Ruth Virgene DuBois Hughes.

C. Clifton DuBois was born on May 22, 1941 near Savannah, GA. Early in life, he developed a passion for education and social work. He was a prominent community organizer during the civil rights movement while attending the Graduate School of Social Work at Boston University. As a PhD student, he went on to become the youngest professor in the UGA Graduate Program in Sociology.

Tirelessly devoted to serving others, he worked passionately throughout his career to help mental health patients transition from being institutionalized to living productive lives in their communities. He was also a dedicated advocate for children with mental health needs. He served on several commissions, including the commission to redesign the mental health system in the State of Georgia. He has been described by those that worked with him as “an outstanding leader and advocate, a true servant leader!”

He will be remembered as an avid reader, dedicated public servant, and loving husband and father. A private memorial service was held in his home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mental Health America of Georgia organization at:
