Obituary of Carl Elmer Stahl, MD
Carl Elmer Stahl, MD passed away peacefully from natural causes on February 23, 2022 in Columbia South Carolina at the age of 100. He spent his final days in comfort, surrounded by love and family.
Carl was born on April 2, 1921 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He served in the Army during World War II and the Korean War. He graduated from the University of Virginia Medical School. Dr. Stahl practiced several specialties, including internal medicine and cardiology, but his primary passion was neurology, where he served as both a direct care physician and a mentor and educator to new and training doctors. He retired from the Wm. Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Hospital in 1986. Carl loved reading about history and human evolution, solving crosswords, and singing old songs to his beloved cat, Bob.
In 1943, Carl married the love of his life, Mary Helen Sams, who predeceased him. He is survived by his brothers Ray and Art, his sister, Evelyn, his daughter Maureen, and his son, Carl Jr. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
In respect of Dr. Stahl’s wishes and beliefs, no funeral service will be held. For those wanting to honor his life and his memory, his family asks that you: Do something kind, today, tomorrow, or maybe even every day. Carl will be remembered by many as the kindest, gentlest man they have ever known. May our daily remembrance of him bring a touch of his kindness to the life of another, so that he may live on in this way.
