Obituary of Joel Lyndon Whitener

Joel Lyndon Whitener passed away peacefully in his home in Eastover, SC on January 28, 2023. He was born on August 20,1958 in Union, SC.

He is preceded in death by his father, Lt. Col. Robert P. Whitener, his mother Patsy L. (Cash) Whitener and sister Deborah L. Potts, aunts Alease (Troy) Blanton, Jeanette (Roy) Byars, EZ (Bob) Cothran, Ann (Curt) Gwinn and Uncle Dean Cash.

He is survived by his daughter, Holly Elizabeth Whitener and grandchildren, Ruthanne Scarlet, Cash Lyndon and Atticus James, his sister Karen (Terry) Marx and nieces, Kelly (Whitener) Gramling, Karianne (Brian) Johnson and nephew, Terry (Leeanna) Marx II and aunt, Carol Cash. As well as five grand-nieces,one grand-nephew and several cousins.

He was a graduate of Hillcrest High School in Sumter, SC. He studied forestry at Central Carolina. He worked for the City of Columbia in the Parks and Recreation Department for 28 years maintaining all the city parks in Columbia, SC. He was employee of the year for several years and took pride in his work. He loved Scuba Diving in the fountains when they needed maintenance. He also enjoyed music and loved working the Summer Concert Series at Finley Park and helped with the lights and sound checks. His hobbies were bird hunting with his bird dogs, scuba diving, riding moto-X bikes and going to moto-X races. He loved riding his Honda Goldwing wherever he could and 4 wheeling in his Jeep. He was also a big fan of the Thunderbirds and enjoyed going to see them every chance he could. Most of all he loved spending time with his friends and family especially his grandchildren.
