Obituary of Guy Wardell Barkdull, Jr.

Guy Wardell Barkdull, Jr. of Columbia, SC, passed away on Thursday, September 20, 2018, and went to be with his Lord and Savior.  He was born on August 9, 1956, in Beaumont, TX, the son of Guy Wardell Barkdull, Sr. (predeceased) and Mary Allie Rine Barkdull Bordelon of Alexandria, LA.  He was predeceased by his older sister Mary Louise Barkdull Mier, and is survived by his sister Cynthia Ann Barkdull Cooper (husband Dennis) and younger brothers John Patrick Barkdull (wife Debbie) and Ryan Michael Barkdull (wife Penny).  His is survived by his wife of nearly 41 years, Vivian Amanda Taylor Barkdull (daughter of Virgil E. Taylor, predeceased, and Frances Clayton Taylor), brothers-in-law Alfred E. Taylor and David W. Taylor (wife Barbara), his sons Daniel Guy Barkdull (wife Corrie) and Richard Edward Barkdull (wife Tamara), and his infant granddaughter Vivian Elisha Barkdull.

After graduating from Bolton High School in Alexandria, LA, Guy worked in restaurant management, retail and industrial shoe sales, before starting his own lawn care business which he ran for the past 20 years.  He was also a “picker,” and loved to sell things at the local flea markets.  Guy was a diehard Dallas Cowboys and Carolina Gamecock football fan; he was a scratch golfer, and loved being with his golfing buddies.  He was proud of the musical heritage of his father before him and sang bass in his church choir and enjoyed Southern Gospel Music, especially the Gaither Vocal Band.

He was a very practical Christian man and met no strangers. He worked hard to help anyone he met in his very unique way of matching “supply and demand,” and he never took advantage of anyone.  Anyone who knew Guy realized he had a big heart, and his generosity was felt by many who crossed his path.  He loved to eat and enjoyed going to any social gathering that involved food.  Guy loved and was loved by his family, neighbors, friends, lawn care customers, church community, but most all his merciful Heavenly Father.

A memorial service to celebrate Guy’s life will be held on Saturday, September 29th at 10:30 AM at Central Church of the Nazarene (address: 105 South Woodside Pkwy., West Columbia, SC 29169). This will be followed by a meal in the Family Life Center, where everyone is invited to eat and pay their respects to Guy’s family.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Central Church of the Nazarene via Compassionate Ministries: “Florence Flood Relief” or Harvest Hope Food Bank.
