Obituary of Dorothy Emma Soehl Gennaro
Dorothy Emma Soehl Gennaro (nee Junker) died peacefully Monday, September 3, 2018, in Columbia, SC. Born in New York, NY January 19, 1920, “Dottie” grew up in North Bergen, NJ. She developed a skill and love of gymnastics as a young woman, which was how she met her first husband. She worked at the American Kennel Club, in New York City, as a homemaker, and eventually as a caregiver until 86. She has lived in Syracuse, NY, West New York, NJ, New Port Richey, FL, Hudson, FL, and Columbia, SC. Following her retirement, she enjoyed cooking, gardening, knitting, and spirited card games of Spite and Malice and Bridge.
As did many of her generation, Dottie faced several challenges, hardships, and losses. She did so, however, with uncompromising grace, determination, and resolve; despite difficult times, she maintained a positive outlook, generous heart, and unswerving faith. Similarly, she truly relished her life, recognizing and remaining thankful for the many blessings – both big and small – it bestowed on her and those she loved.
Dottie is reunited with her sister Elinor Suman, husband Ernest Soehl, beloved sons Alan and Philip Soehl, second husband John Gennaro, and countless friends and loved ones, especially the gang from the old gym.
Carrying her memory in love are her stepson, Richard Gennaro (Cathy) daughter-in-law Cheryl Soehl, grandsons Aaron (Tracy), Hudson, Jeffry, and Cooper Soehl and Nico Gennaro, granddaughter Olivia Gennaro, daughter-in-law Mary Soehl, and many friends.
A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbia October 13 followed by a private interment.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Dottie may donate to the charity of their choice. She would also certainly ask each of us to slow down, value our precious time on earth, and hold those we love close.
